11: Background information The Devon and Exeter Institution was founded in 1813 as a proprietary library and is now a charity. The Institution has close links with Exeter University and other local societies and organisations.
12: Collections The library contains about 36,000 volumes, including long runs of nineteenth-century journals, theology, history, topography, early science, biography and literature. A large and growing collection of books, journals, newspapers, prints and maps relates to the South-Western counties.
13: Building Grade II* listed building overlooking the Cathedral Green which retains a gatehouse range from a Tudor house belonging to the Courtenay family. The central portion was reconstructed in 1814 and has two large library rooms lit by domed lanterns.
