| 11: Background information | Plymouth Proprietary Library was founded in 1810 in an elegant building designed by Foulston, which was destroyed in the 1941 Blitz, together with most of the stock. |
| 12: Collections | The collection consists of 17,000 volumes, mainly 19th- and 20th-century fiction, biographies, diaries and letters, history, travel and other general non-fiction. In addition, there is the Cottonian Collection of books, prints and drawings, presented in 1853 by William Cotton, which is housed in Plymouth City Museum and is administered by Plymouth City Council. Other special collections include those of Devon and Cornwall non-fiction and Dartmoor fiction. |
