7: Membership details Residential accomodation for up to 36 resident readers. Rates available on request. External readers pay an annual subscription of £30 (reduced rates for clergy and students).
8: Activities, publications etc. Annual programme of short residential courses on theological subjects. Part-time postgraduate programme on ministry and religion, in partnership with the University of Wales, Bangor. Also hosts the Centre for Religion, Film and Contemporary Culture in partnership with the University of Chester and the Gladstone Centre for Victorian Studies in Wales and NW England in partnership with the University of Liverpool. Friends' Newsletter. Occasional public lectures and open days.
9: Refreshments The Coffee Shop is open to readers and members of the public from 10.30 to 12.00, Monday- Saturday. Lunch is available between 12.30 and 13.30. Full board is available to resident readers.
10: Visitors / Researchers All readers are required to provide a testimonial or letter of reference from an appropriate institution or a professional person. Readers wishing to book accommodation should contact the Bookings Secretary to check availability. There is a small exhibition on W.E. Gladstone, which is open to the public.
11: Background information Building on William Eward Gladstone's legacy of a renowned collection of books and a country house for the pursuit of divine learning, St Deiniol's Library today encourages research and promotes education in theology, intellectual history and nineteenth-century studies through the growth and preservation of its collections, through the development and support of a fellowship of scholars, through a dedicated programme of courses and lectures and through the display and interpretation of its resources to an ever-widening public - Mission Statement.
12: Collections An Arts / Humanities collection of some 200,000 printed items, particularly strong in Theology, Victorian Studies, History, English Literature, Philosophy and Gladstoniana. Special collections include W.E. Gladstone's personal library of about 32,000 volumes, The Bishop Moorman Franciscan Collection, and the Glynne-Gladstone Manuscripts. The collections are reference only; there are no borrowing facilities. The catalogue is available via the website. The retroconversion of the card catalogues should be completed by 2009.
13: Building The Library is housed in a purpose-built, grade-one-listed building, designed by John Douglas. It was formally opened in 1902 as the national memorial to W.E. Gladstone, replacing the original corrugated iron construction.
