| 7: Membership details | Society has 700-800 members, who have automatic access and borrowing privileges to part of the collection anytime that the museum is open (Tuesday-Sunday 0930-1630) |

| 11: Background information | The Society acquired books for its members and to support the work of the curators soon after 1823. We are the fortunate recipient of small and large donations of books and archives. We purchased the stock of the Whitby Subscription Library, the collection of former Librarian Percy Burnett amongst others. |
| 12: Collections | Subjects cover history, including maritime, archaeology, people and buildings, geology, industry, agriculture specific to Whitby and surrounding area. Approx. 10,000 items, inc. books, journals, muster rolls, ships' log-books, ledgers, deeds, wills, notes and diaries, maps and photographs. |
